Lately, I can't stop listening to Indie Rock duo, sisters Sierra and Bianca Casady, known as Cocorosie. Their band name is derived from the nicknames their mother affectionately gave the two; Bianca is Coco, and Sierra is Rosie. Cocorosie's style is one that, for me, took some getting used to. If you've never listened to any Freak/Psych Folk (also known as "New Weird America"), like Joanna Newsom and Animal Collective, Cocorosie may not win you over at first. Give them a second listen. You'll be hooked.
Known for their use of children's electronic toys as instruments, along with some guitar, harp, and piano, Cocorosie's music takes me to another world. With the pair's twistedly endearing lyrics, Bianca's harmonious vocals and Sierra's wide array of makeshift instrumental skills, I really have been unable to take them off repeat.
The pair began around 2003. While Sierra was living Paris attempting to become an opera singer, Bianca was dabbling in her studies. She wasn't content though, so she sought out Sierra in Paris. Over the next two months, the sisters devoted themselves to musicmaking. Oddly, they elected to do this in Sierra'a apartment bathroom. They eventually developed a hip hop record titled, "Word to the Crow", but it was never released. Their first official album, La Maison de Mon RĂªve, was initially only meant to be for their small group of friends. In 2004 though, it was released on indie label Touch and Go Records, who had somehow got ahold of the record. Cocorosie has toured with Bright Eyes, TV on the Radio, Devendra Banhart, and several others.
Presently, the two sisters are living together in an apartment in Brooklyn. Their third and most recent album, The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn, is to be released this week, April 10, but has leaked all over blogs for a while now. The girls can be found on tour in Europe through most of this month, making a few stops in California for Coachella at the beginning of May, and heading back to Europe until August.
I definitely recommend that you give these ladies a listen. Below, I provided my favorite track of their sophomore album, Noah's Ark, as well as one of my favorites off their latest album. Enjoy!
